This phase-contrast device has four phase plan achromatic objectives, including a 100x/1.25 oil immersion objective. The 40x and 100x magnification objectives are spring-loaded to protect the objectives in case of accidental shocks. The kit also includes four filters (yellow, blue, green, matt). The device is designed for studying transparent specimens, mainly living cells, without staining, which is detrimental to the cells.

The phase condenser is mounted on the microscope instead of the brightfield condenser. The ring diaphragms on the revolving nosepiece and the phase rings of the objectives are centered using a centering telescope (included). Filters are used to increase the contrast of an image and reduce the halo effect (the glow around a sample that interferes with observation).
